IOWA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (IDOT)
Starts April 16, 2013A MESSAGE FROM THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (IDOT) – For more than 10 years, Iowans have been able to call or log on to the 511 traveler information system for current road conditions of interstates and several state highways. The 511 system has been updated to simplify its use. The Web version offers three formats and is intended for trip planning. All three versions can be found at www.511ia.org. The 511 telephone system is geared toward motorists already en route. (For your safety and those sharing the road, do not use your mobile phone while driving. Have a passenger make the call, or find a safe place to pull off the road). Dial 5-1-1 (in Iowa) or 800-288-1047 (nationwide) and follow the voice prompts.

Farm Rescue Foundation
Starts April 16, 2013Farm Rescue Foundation, a new nonprofit organization that helps farm families recovering from injury or illness, has announced that individuals may now apply for assistance in acquiring specialized, non-medical equipment to overcome physical challenges. Temporary volunteer labor is also available to help with physical challenges during the recovery process to a limited number of cases. Starts April 16, 2013“Cat Companions for Seniors”: Through the generosity of Mr. John Schenken of Marion, along with Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control, a select group of companion felines may be adopted FREE OF CHARGE! Adoptable cats will be spayed/neutered, have initial vaccinations, treated for fleas/ticks, dewormed, micro-chipped, and have one-year rabies vaccination. Some may be declawed. Free adoption also includes: a litter box, kitty litter, pan liners, scoop, food/water bowl, bag of food, toys, collar and cat carrier, and a free bag of food. Eligible seniors must have landlord approval to adopt and pet deposits must be paid in advance. Kirkwood Community College – Needs Volunteers

Cedar Rapids’ first “no-kill” animal shelter
Starts April 16, 2013Cedar Rapids’ first “no-kill” animal shelter is now open at 3800 Wilson Avenue, Southwest. Dogs Forever Safe Place is reinventing the concept of animal shelter. No adoptable dog is euthanized. The facility is completely staffed by volunteers. Adoption fees are on a sliding scale based on the dog’s age. The “Seniors for Seniors” program allows senior citizens to adopt a dog senior dog free of charge. Feel free to visit the shelter any Saturday from 11am to 3pm. Cedar Rapids Public Library – Atomic Training
Starts April 16, 2013The Cedar Rapids Public Library now has a new training resource available for Library card holders. Atomic Training is an online database of an on-demand software video training and tutorials designed to improve proficiency and build specific skills in a variety of programs. Card holders now have access to training videos and tutorials on programs such as Excel, Skype, FilemakerPro, PowerPoint, Twitter, Garageband, Photoshop and so much more. Access is available from the Library’s website anytime, anywhere.

Starts April 16, 2013The Cedar Rapids Public Library offers improved assistance to job seekers. The free Drop-In Jobs Lab is open Monday mornings from 9am to noon in the Technology classroom. Assistance with resumes, online job searching, online applications, email and other employment related subjects will be offered by librarians to anyone who is in need, at no cost. No reservations are necessary, the public is invited to drop in anytime during the three-hour period. There is also a free Job Seekers Support Group led by others actively looking for employment. Starts April 19, 2013According to the Iowa Donor Registry, more than 1,700 patients in the United States received a lung transplant in 2012 while just as many are currently on the waiting list. Dennis Fish of Cedar Rapids currently awaits a lung transplant and his family is raising awareness about the need for organ donors and blood donations, as it’s likely Dennis will require blood transfusions during transplant surgery.

Starts April 20, 2013Tune up your bike and hit the road for Habitat! Iowa Valley Habitat For Humanity is hosting its first annual Tour de Maize fundraising bicycle ride, Saturday, April 20th to Sunday April 21st. The round trip bike ride is scheduled to leave from Coralville along the Cedar Valley Nature Trail and arrive at Prairiewoods in Cedar Rapids. Participants are encouraged to stay overnight at Prairiewoods Retreat Center and ride back to Iowa City the next morning. The event will include a scenic bike tour of eastern Iowa’s corridor, with stops placed strategically along the way for refreshments and rest. Once riders arrive at Prairiewoods, there will be games, prizes, yoga, entertainment and more!

The event is open to all Cedar Rapids and surrounding community members looking for a wide variety of new and used hand tools, power tools, antique tools, and lawn and garden care tools for their upcoming spring projects. All fundraising efforts from the event will help to aid in the daily operations of the Tool Library and the maintenance of the inventory and workshop tools. Tool donations can be brought to the Tool Library during open hours of operation from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays, or to the Matthew 25 offices between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Goodwill of the Heartland
Starts April 20, 2013Goodwill of the Heartland will host a computer donation drive and shredding event on Saturday, April 20, at the Iowa City Work Center, 1410 South First Avenue. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Community members to can donate used computers and related gear for Goodwill Reboot. Goodwill Reboot recycles computers and gear to benefit the Goodwill of the Heartland mission. At the same event, community members can bring up to two boxes of paper for shredding at no cost. No appointments are necessary to participate in the event, but all items for shredding must be free of bindings and large clips. Paper clips and staples are permitted.
EcoFest 2013
Starts April 22, 2013This year’s EcoFest will feature iGreenCR, Cedar Rapids’ sustainability initiative. iGreenCR is hosting a wide variety of family and environmentally friendly activities such as litterball, a recycling sort, creating a mural celebrating our parks, learning more about water conservation, stormwater and electricity usage. EcoFest will be held in the New Bohemia District from 10-6pm on April 20. EcoFest celebrates Earth Day, which falls on Monday, April 22nd. In addition to iGreenCR activities EcoFest will have outdoor music, a nature play area, a green roof tour, an Eco-Film Festival, an Eco-Market and a wide variety of other activities.
Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award-Winning “BURN” movie.
Starts April 23, 2013April 23 & 24 – Cedar Rapids firefighters have partnered with the Collins Road Theatres, 1462 Twixt Town Road, Marion to present the Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award-Winning “BURN” movie. The film will be showing on April 23rd and April 24th.
“BURN” brings audiences closer into the flames than ever before – into real fires and real collapsing buildings. The film captures the bravery of Detroit’s Engine Company 50, one of the busiest firehouses in America. Underpaid, underfunded and working with broken-down equipment, these firefighters risk their lives on every shift. The film is being presented by the Iowa Professional Firefighters Association and the Iowa Firefighters Association. Tickets are $15 and are available online at www.detroitfirefilm.org. A portion of all profits from the film will go the Leary Firefighters Foundation to purchase new equipment for firefighters.

Job seekers are encouraged to bring copies of their resume and be dressed for success, as they will have a chance to speak to over 75 employers from the Corridor and surrounding areas. In addition, those seeking employment will be able to take assessments for the career readiness certificate. The event is an incredible opportunity for both job seekers and employers.
2nd Annual Mini Maker Gaire

Free Family Fun at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum
Starts April 27, 2013Kite flying fun and puppets! April 27 - April 28th is a weekend of fun for the entire family at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum. Saturday, the 27th, Kites Over Hoover Park will feature the 180 Go! Kite Performance Team and Sunday, the 28th the Eulenspiegel Puppets will perform, followed by a Children’s Workshop. Travel Down the Yellow Brick Road at Ushers Ferry
Starts April 27, 2013The cast of Theatre Cedar Rapids’ production of “The Wizard of Oz” will take over Ushers Ferry Historic Village on Saturday, April 27 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. (Participants must arrive by 12:30 p.m. and stay until 3:30 p.m.) People of all ages are invited to travel down the Yellow Brick Road and meet the play’s costumed characters along the way. There will be a magician, games on the lawn, a full-sized scarecrow making activity, and treats with the Wizard. Children are invited to participate costumed as their favorite Oz character.

Michael Daugherty to perform at McKinley
Starts May 2, 2013McKinley Middle School will welcome home one of their most famous alumni, GRAMMY®-winning composer Michael Daugherty, on May 2 as guest conductor of the McKinley 8th grade band. The 7:30 p.m. performance will be held in the McKinley Auditorium. Daugherty, who attended McKinley Middle School and Washington High School, returns to his hometown for the Orchestra Iowa Premiere of his new work American Gothic, which was inspired by the artist Grant Wood.The middle school program will include a performance by the McKinley musicians of a Daugherty composition written for middle school band called “Alligator Alley.”
Daugherty will begin his residency at McKinley at 1 p.m. with a rehearsal and will then present a lecture and performance for the student body at 2 p.m. The 6th Grade Band will present their concert at 6 p.m. and the Jazz, 7th Grade and 8th Grade bands will perform at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free and a reception will follow both performances in the cafeteria.

Suicide Survivors Support Group
Starts May 3, 2013The Suicide Survivors Support Group offers participants a safe place to talk about memories, ongoing grief and the stigma surrounding death by suicide. New members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Support group meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month and there is no cost to attend. Starts May 9, 2013Jefferson High School presents the musical, Children of Eden, May 9-11, in the Jefferson Auditorium. With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the play is a musical telling of the story of Genesis. The show features a student cast of 45, a 12-member orchestra, and crew.

No-Kill Dog Shelter Moves to New Location on Cedar Rapids’ SW Side
Starts May 11, 2013Dogs Forever Safe Place, the only no-kill animal shelter in the Cedar Rapids-Marion area, has opened at 809 Rockford Road SW. Dogs Forever also has a store with gifts for dogs and people located next door to the shelter at 817 Rockford Road SW. The shelter is open every Saturday 11-3 and will hold an Open House from 11-3 Saturday, May 11.
Dogs Forever Safe Place was formerly at 3800 Wilson Avenue SW for 10 months before moving to its current location. The 809 building houses four or five dogs, which are walked, fed and socialized by volunteers three times each day. For more information, visit dog-rescue-iowa.org.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band Performs Free Concert at Brucemore
Starts May 13, 2013Brucemore will host a special 2013 event celebrating Hancher’s 40th anniversary and commemorating the five-year anniversary of the flood. On June 13 at 7:00 p.m., Living with Floods, will bring the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Hancher's opening performers in 1972—back to Iowa for a series of seven free outdoor concerts. Named for the esteemed music venue in the heart of New Orleans's French Quarter, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a true national treasure. Hailed as "America's Best Traditional Jazz Band" by All About Jazz, the group has been a driving force in American music ever since its inception in 1961, counting jazz royalty like Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong among its distinguished alumni. Now in its 51st year, this national treasure continues to honor the dirty rags, mournful blues, and laid back swing that form jazz's legacy.

Second Annual Children’s Choral Workshop-Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale
Starts May 19, 2013The Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale announces its second annual Children’s Choral Workshop. This workshop will provide third, fourth, and fifth graders with the opportunity to expand their musical skills by participating in a vocal music group with children their own age. It will also provide performance experience; Children’s Choral Workshop participants will perform with the Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale at its Pictures at an Exhibition concert on May 19, 2013. This six-week workshop will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 6:40pm at First Lutheran Church in downtown Cedar Rapids. Rehearsals begin on Tuesday, April 9, and will run through Tuesday, May 14. The workshop will end with a performance on Sunday, May 19. Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale Announces Pictures at an Exhibition
Starts May 19, 2013The Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale announces a Pictures at an Exhibition performance on May 19, 2013, to close its 2012-2013 season.
For this event, the Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale is partnering with Campbell Steele Gallery in Marion to bring in work from local artists as part of Pictures at an Exhibition. Art from Sharon Burns-Knutson, Stan Fellows, Gordan Kellenberger, Bob Naujoks, Paul Marlow, Corrine Smith, Priscilla Steele, and Marcia Wegman will be on display as CRCC performs selections from Cole Porter, James Taylor, The Doobie Brothers, and Leonard Bernstein.
In support of its mission to promote choral music and arts appreciation while providing youth and community outreach, CRCC’s Children’s Choral Workshop participants will also be performing as part of the concert. This group of 13 children from the Cedar Rapids area has been working with Director Rebecca Collier to prepare a selection of music especially for the event.
Before the concert, the Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale is hosting a lasagna dinner beginning at 5pm.
Pictures at an Exhibition will be held on Sunday, May 19. Dinner begins at 5pm, and the concert starts at 7pm at First Lutheran Church, located at 1000 3rd Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids.
